The name¶

• f for free and open-source software.
• AI for the computer-vision models that detect features such as buildings, roads, and trees.
• r for resilience, and the responsibility to the communities that humanitarian mapping serves.

Who builds it¶

fAIr is developed by the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team with contributions from the wider OpenStreetMap and geo-AI community. Models, training datasets, and outputs are published openly.

Other collaborators include GIScience, Omdena, Togglecorp, Zindi, national Red Cross societies, and academic groups studying AI-assisted mapping. Community mappers contribute training data through the Open Mapping Gurus program and the fAIrSwipe community call.
